Instructions for Changing Medeco Cabinet Locks

  1. With a soft flame from a propane or oxy-acetylene torch, carefully heat the top of the exterior lock cover. Using pliers, gently twist the cover loose and slide it off the inner sleeve. The cover is held in place with a retaining compound that deactivates when heated.
  2. Clean excess compound from sleeve and cover with emery cloth or sand paper.
  3. Remove the 3-48 set screw from the L shaped slot with a hex key.
  4. Remove the two machine screws from the top and bottom of the sleeve.
  5. Remove lock mechanism from sleeve and install new lock according to diagram reversing above procedures.
  6. To reinstall the 3-48 set screw, insert key in lock and turn right 1/8” turn. Pull back nylon washer with awl or small punch to expose the threaded hole in the lock cylinder.
  7. The lock cover may be retained with retaining compound or plumbers solder.

Note: For round units, first secure handle from covering the lock by using wire or string to hold it back or inserting a small block inside cabinet at inspection plate.

  1. With a soft flame from a propane or oxy-acetylene torch, carefully heat the top of the exterior lock cover. Using pliers, gently twist the cover loose and slide it off the inner sleeve. The cover is held in place with a retaining compound that deactivates when heated.
  2. Clean excess compound from sleeve and cover with emery cloth or sand paper.
  3. Remove the small set screw from the side of the sleeve and remove the lock cylinder, springs and pins from inside the sleeve.
  4. Put the drill jig over the lock sleeve and position so that the holes are vertical, one on top and one on bottom. Drill the holes through the sleeve with the supplied drill, remove the jig and de-burr the holes.
  5. Install the new lock mechanism with nylon washer and spring in place. Be sure the slots for machine screws are aligned with the screw holes. Secure the lock with the machine screws and check the lock for proper function.
  6. The lock cover may be retained with retaining compound or plumbers solder.
